Henry: So your point here is that fisheries shouldn't be regulated, because you eat fish? You say you don't fish recreationally? What kind of fishing do you do?

Public trust doctrine is really hard to maintain when they aren't even sure how many people are fishing?

What the heck is a "mana charter" - do you perhaps refer to the "Magna Carta"? If so, what is it that might make you think the 13th century British Law would supercede our ability to legislate fisheries regulations?

here is a small insight to prior comment those lakes and resevours that support striped bass ,have a limit of fifteen inches ,a take limit of ten fish which only two can be over twenty inchesand no season the dec has a limit of one twenty eight inch striper. and a season the recreational sheep agree with this socialistic fantasy.

for 239 years we had no license. a license violates the public trust doctrine. and the mana chartar. due to the vastness of the foreshore and tidal waters a management program will be a waste of time effort and taxes. the dec and feds have screwed up striped bass winter flounder black fish and twenty other species of fin fish inclusive of lobster. pie in the sky programs only generate feel good legis . one to look at the grass roots information to realize fresh water technology will not work in salt water. .i for one fish for food in salt water not recreation. i can find a lot cheaper recreation than fishing in the marine district. .if a license goes through the marine division will loose the present funding to the smaller funding that a license will provide. in the future the fee will skyrocket .as the boats fore hire fees show from a two hundred fee to six hundred at present. ccny agenda is to make stripers a game fishfor one. the vastness of the fishery extends from the gulf of maine to the gulf of mexico. how can one asertain the fish populations when they reproduce in the trillions. a license is a ego trip by those that see it as means to power.

This a great article. I greatly appreciate any article suggesting wading in South Florida. I live a small condo even a small kayak can be too big to store, and this kind of information is crucial for us fisherman that depend on wading the waters and finding good spots on feet.

Thanks, Capt. Kumiski!

Joey, you haven't logged in since 2007. You haven't posted on a forum or provided a fishing report EVER that I can see. Complain as you like...but the truth is this: you haven't been a contributing member of this community that I can see. So why not get involved instead of posting complaints?

Very well said and written, John.
As is always the case, the money involved will always prevail. It is time, with the advent of the SW License, to have the recreational money and users to speak and be heard. There are something like 550 commercial Striped Bass tag-holders. Less than half are actively using their tags and are letting the minority fill the tags for them. I say let the real fisherman, the active commercial fisherman, get all the tags. This will truly make it a worthwhile fishery for them, clear out the non-actives, and have a group of real fisherman to deal with. Enforcement in the gill net fisheries on the East End will get this done, will reduce the high grading (since they will not have the time and man power to fill all their tags if they high-grade and thus get a more mixed year class of harvested fish) and the commercials will be happier and less likely to want more and more. Just an idea from talking with the tag holders and "real" fisherman...Keep up the good work John

Hey John I live on molokai and grew up fly fishing in Oregon. I have been trying out some Deschutes river nymphs on the reef, the popio and bonefish seem to go for hairs ear and brown stone fly nymphs. I am new to fly fishing on the reef and was wondering if it is common to use nymphs. thanks Matt 808 216 3380
