New York – New Jersey

From Capt. John McMurray

From Capt. John McMurray

Well, we have been scraping out a pretty decent middle of the season despite some high temps that are always to be expected. Fishing early in the day where it is a little cooler and where there is a little better current has been the key to our success out east and in the rest of the region. Bonito have yet to grace our report but I think not for long. Let us know if they are in your ‘hood if you like. Now would be the tiime to start checking likely haunts.

Tight Lines, strong knots and staunch points.

Capt. Vinny Catalano reports:

IMG_0249Well the warmer temps have hit us hard this past week but the fishing even though slowed up a bit still produced some solid catches! The flats have slowed but there was a solid amout of bait out mid sound which made for some nice blitzes of mostly blues in the 5 to 8 pound class and bass mixed in before the sun got high enough to turn them off. Monday mornings trip was the highlight of the week, we started drifting a rockpile in 35 feet water at first light and didn’t need to move until the tide died ending the day with a load of bass from 15 to 30 pounds!

Thanks Andrew.

Capt. Andrew Derr reports:

We are finding fish in all of our regular spots and and awaiting the arrival of Green Bonito with patience. Up until now the fishing has been suprisingly good on the east end, with Fishers, Plum, and the Gulls all producing with sandeels, spearing and anchovies all present in the area. I’ll be trout fishing in the Adirondacks for the week so I’ll be off the salt and into the sweet but I have high hopes for greenies when I get back. We’ll be chasing them in a new (to me) 23′ SeaCraft which makes it hard to leave but I am not complaining about cool Adirondack evenings, trout fishing and campfires…

Until then, tight lines.

Capt. John McMurray reports:

mcmurrystripers2Aug 9th- Still go’n good! I can’t remember an August where the inshore fishing has been so good. Plenty of bass under the birds in the morning. Most fish are in the 24″ range, but each morning we seem to be finding a few fish that are in the 30″ size range. Real quality fish, particularly for this time of the year. A week ago they were on butterfish, but now they seemed to be keyed in on a brand new influx of peanut bunker. Lots and lots of peanut bunker around.

The bass blitzes have pretty much been dying down by 8AM when the sun gets high. Which is fine as I’ve been shooting over to some of the local structure spots and throwing poppers up against the rocks and banging some monster bluefish. These fish are well north of 10-pounds with some upwards of 15 to 17 pounds. They are really strong and some jump like tarpon. Super fun and super aggressive, eating both flies and plugs readily.

mcmurraystriperThis is a slow time of the year for us as the fishing isn’t generally thought of as being good, but I can tell you first hand, that it is indeed good! So give us a shout if you want to get out. Plenty of dates open. Oh, almost forgot, the offshore thing seems to allude me every time I plan to get out. The weather just hasn’t been on my side this year. But the word on the street is that the bluefin and mahi are pretty thick out there. And the mahi are certainly catchable via spin and fly gear.

So keep that in mind. It is indeed an option.

James Pascarella and Joel Weiss with some Northport Beasts

James Pascarella and Joel Weiss with some Northport Beasts

Andrew, Wow! I just finished a trip off Montauk with Captains Vinny Catelano and Scot Calitri on my C Sic Again. We had bass, blues and played with some beautiful Mahi on the fly. This is a great challenge and soon there will be Skipjack and Bluefin Tuna. If you are interested in joining me for one of these special days, I have a few openings.
Last weekend saw me fishing in the Adirondack for Small Mouth Bass and Northern pike. What a gas!

Joel Weiss and James Pascarelli were on a Northport trip on Monday night. They warmed up with small blues on poppers, tins and flies. We then went to some rock piles and James worked the pencil popper for some nice blues and a bass. Joel then worked his magic and a beast flew out of the water and latched on to the popper. Since it jumped clear of the water we assumed blue but it turned out to be a 38 inch, 23pound striper.

BASST,
