Fishing- the Economic Stimulus Package!

Cape Cod Saltwater Fishing Report for July 10, 2009

Jul 10th, 2009 | By Bob Parsons | Category: Cape Cod and the Islands, Lead Article

How much do you spend on fishing? Or perhaps another way of looking at it, How much does fishing cost you?  I know some of us keep a journal of our fishing trips, tides, lures, weather, and results, what about a journal of all your expenses to fish?  For some it may be no more than the cost of some bait, a few hooks and weights and the gas for the trip.  For others, there is the “boat” you know- a hole in the water we pour money into!. For me that was a $900 repair/maintenance cost start the season.  Then there was the friend I took fishing that fed five plugs to bluefish.

Think of what the tuna chasers are spending, bigger boats, larger gas tanks, those gold barrels called reels don’t come cheep.  Maybe keeping cost of all the expensive might be a detriment to continued fishing if you really knew what it was costing you.  Earlier in the season there was a group of gentlemen from the west cost that came to Cape Cod for a week plus of fishing.  Apparently the organizer of the group did keep somewhat of a tab on the group’s costs for their stay.   Now this apparently did not include airfare or car rentals, but did include food, cottage rentals and guides/tips.  Final tally somewhere in the vicinity of $24000.  Now that is a Stimulus Package to the local economy!

Enjoy the sun this weekend and send me your reports.

Buzzards Bay and the Islands

leclar1Fishing this week in buzzards bay and the elizabeth islands has blown wide open. We have seen the arrival of a new wave of fresh fish and these are probably our summer residents. The good news is that while there are lots of fish and some are good size, they are not legal fish for commercial season so I will most likely (but not definately) be fishing these spots this summer without the commercial fisherman.  Who knows how long this fishing will last, but the water and air temps feel more like the first week of june than july.

Vineyard Bass

Vineyard Bass

Attached are a couple of pictures taken this week of client with blue sky in the background. My report will be out tomorrow. Lots of bluefish have invaded the Vineyard but the bass are still available and feeding in the
rips. More to follow when I get the report done.

Nantucket

From Capt.Corey Grammill of Bill Fishers Tackle shop we have this report:

pcronin22It seems like a whole new world out there. West Wind, bright sunshine, which all means waters are warming up. Most hope that this trend will continue and that Nantucket will finally enjoy summer, although I know the Bass Fisherman were selfishly enjoying the consistent cold water.

With the new weather pattern fishing has certainly changed. The Bass are moving away from shore and those around the shore are becoming more skitterish. That being said Bass are still being caught, anglers are simply having to work harder and fish into the night a bit more. Reports have it that fish have been taken along the South Shore at Madequecham, Surfside,  Cisco, and Madaket. There have been a few fish caught along Dionis Beach as well although it has slowed down from last week.

Bluefish have been reported from the beach from Coatue, 40th Pole, The galls, as well as off of fisherman’s when the crowds are gone.

Fishing from the boat has also been a bit inconsistent. Great Point has been fishing better on a west tide, although the east tide is an early morning tide right now and has been producing some Keeper Bass. Great Point has not been consistent. Sankaty has been producing some Bass and some Blues. The Eastern rips are still producing although they are not as hot and heavy as the water temp begins to rise. It pays to explore out East.

Blues are loaded off of Pochick and the South Shore. Pochick is a rip, while the South Shore is sight fishing for surfing fish. GREAT Surface action.

Tight lines,
Capt. Corey Gammill

And from Capt Lynne at Cross Rip Outfitters

Despite some windy and rotten weather the Striper fishing is still strong over here in Nantucket. The Sight fishing is still strong and the South Shore was loaded with Blues today. The east end of the Island is still loaded with Bass and Blues. The trouble is trying to get through the Blues

to get to the Bass.
Thanks,
Lynne

The Big Ditch

Report from the BobG

Thought I’d try a new spot today. Not a “new” new spot, just someplace I’ve yet to fish this season. When I arrived, it was pretty much like my old spots. Loads of small to medium fish breaking all over hell, and they still won’t hit a thing. But in this spot, they were breaking much closer to shore. So, that’s good, since now I don’t have to cast as far to catch nothing.

After making a lot of fruitless casts. switching between rods, and trying different lures, I tried a bait I rarely if ever use.

Made a long cast, one bounce, and hook up (on my lighter rod). Fish makes a huge run in the strong tide. 15 minutes later, beach my biggest fish of the season. Taped out at 48″, with amazing girth. I est weight ~40-43lbs. She was hooked in the corner of the mouth, which facilitated a quick release. She flared her gills and took off, and is swimming as
we speak.

Barnstable Harbor

Myself and a few others had similar experiences. Fishing the flats and edges of structures has been slow. I had one 2″ fish to show for a half day effort. Others worked all the way out to the grass patches with not much to show for their time. That does not mea there is not fish here, several of the charter boats with their heavier tackle and trolling technique caught a number of fish from the channels.

Slowly I’m getting more information.
