Ice In The Guides Possible(Say It Ain't So)

In the news…looks like the first big blast of winter is heading our way.  I heard  “wintry mix” used by the weatherman and it sent shivers down my spine literally when I was walking the dog.  I could feel the moisture in the air and there was a big ring around the moon.  I hid by the fire seeking warmth while my lab egged me on to go back outside.  For you see, he likes to play hide and go seek when the moon is out.  Listening to the crackling pieces of oak of the first fire of the year did remind me to move a temporary fly tying station located equidistant from the fire and the bar.

On the fishing front, Bay anglers still waiting to see the push of big late season stripers as Bay surface temps dip below 50 degrees while breaking fish on top are still present where bait can be found.  North Carolina anglers are still hunting false albacore off the beach but this action is winding down.  Trout fishing inshore is holding and Rockfish will become more of a target for those looking for a pull.  I like striped bass fishing…never met one that I did not like especially when he just whacked my streamer that I tied by the fire!

This probably my last installment for the season and I wanted to thank those of you who clicked to check us out and to those who contributed their reports and photos to let everyone know what was going on out there on the water.  Hope Santa gives you the new gear that you need for next spring.  I want improved water quality and legislation to preserve it for future generations.  Maybe a kayak would be a good idea too so I can get up in the marsh and explore some new territory.  I need some new dog toys so wonder lab will stay out of the fish room and quit customizing my cork grips on my rods.  My list has just started…have a Merry Christmas and good luck out there.

Don't forget to send me your own reports, and until next week...

Tight Lines!

 NEWS
National Forecast
First major snowstorm of the season
A complex weather pattern will lead to a threat for wintry precipitation across the South, Midwest and Northeast over the next few days.

Upper Bay

Thanks to the Maryland Fishing Report from the MD DNR:

Small boat anglers are still finding breaking fish but with a lot of the bait schools gone, one has to look farther and longer. Generally speaking the bay surface water temperature is starting to dip below 50 degrees so the bait is definitely headed south. Everyone is hoping the big fish make their run up the bay this weekend to give us a great last week of striped bass season. Time and weather will tell.

Middle Bay

The fishing report from the middle bay when it comes to the big fall run stripers can best be summed up, as “it’s tough out there”. .....no reports from this part of the Bay as the Maryland Fishing Report speaks of tough conditions.

Lower Bay

The Maryland Fishing report:

Reports from anglers fishing the major rivers tell of very little action and they also noted that the large schools of bait present last week seem to be gone. The theory is that the strong winds last week pushed the bait south. The good fishing everyone enjoyed at the Target Ship for the last several weeks seems to be but a memory. Everyone seems to agree that the trout are gone but interesting enough a few medium sized bluefish were caught over the weekend

North Carolina Coast

Capt. Gordon Churchill reports:

Had great weather and really good albie fishing the past few days. I got to take some guys from a band I really enjoy called Moossa.

I took the lead singer John and the guitarist Jimmy and we got into some albies. We only fished a couple hours in the afternoon and they were pretty pleased when that first one started zipping line off of the reel. Today we had a special treat as the fish were in really shallow water and we were throwing Crease Flies and poppers at them. What a treat to see the albies gang up on the poor little popper as we brought it in. We would throw it out and all of a sudden there would be a pack of them under it, slashing like crazy until one got it. We had numerous doubleheaders and would have had triples if we had another guy with us. Hope to see you out there..... Capt. Gordon Churchill

Capt. Dave Dietzler sent this quick note:

Bluefins/ trout / albacore / and the stripers are just starting to show!!!!..... Capt. Dave Diezler

Capt. Doug Sinclair also sent in a quick one...and we know that means the fishing is hot!

The specs and rock are thick in the neuse river....Capt. Doug Sinclair
