Thank you until next season.

This will be my last Fishwire of the 2004 fishing season. While the reports are coming to an end the fishing has not. People are still waiting for a big push of the cows and schoolies are still being caught up the rivers. But the guides whom I depend upon for information are turning their attention to other endeavors. Capt Ford had plans of heading to the southern cape waters in search of the bonoto and false albacore the never make it up into Maine waters. Although surprise surprise there is a report (with picture) of a small bonito caught in the Merrimack waters. I would how the good captain made out. The waters he was planning on fishing got close to 7 inches of rain and winds gusting up to 60mph. Some off season trips Capt John is planning this year are: Folks can email me through reel-time or my web page for any details..Panama - We have groups going in Novenmer, Febuary and March. Still looig for a few people to join those groups and trying to put another group together for early May.Venezuela- peacock and payara fishing. Groups are forming now. Capt. John FordPortland Guide ServicePortland Maine207)471-5858.

Capt Tim Rafford operates a fishing lodge during our winter in the Patagonia region of Chile. I am always looking for free plugs! My web page is www.calendar-islands.com <http://www.calendar-islands.com> . Plenty of pictures and information on my Chile program.

Captain Harvey Wheeler of Maven Charters - I'll be putting my Mako to bed for the winter at the end of the month and focus on big smallmouth during October. Anyone interested in catching a 5 lb. bronzeback should give me a call at 207 829-5485.

I would also like to include Capt Peter Fallon  824 Main Road Phippsburg, Maine 04562

http://www.mainestripers.comfor his contributions over the season along with Capt Tom from Veronaislandcharters.com

Maineguideman along with Tim Miller continue to report there triumps on the forums so check out the New England forums to hopefully keep tabs on the big push.  So check the conditions of your tip ups, Mix up the gas for the old auger and keep busy till next season.

Don't forget to send me your own reports, and until next week...

Tight Lines!

Reports from the board

Ugly Child is still getting out.

Fished around the mouth of the Piscataqua this morning. Found numerous schools of fish, nothing huge on the end of my line but a few boils looked like much better fish. The fish were finning on the top, slurping really small bait. The bait looked to be about 3/4" long. All our fish were caught on top water poppers and a small deciever.Active morning, lots of fish caught and lots to look at but didn't get anything over 23".
As the tide got stronger the fishing got better, it was hard to go to work because if felt like with enough time spent the bigger fish could be found... I'll try again tomorrow.

from flyfishermannh

We arrived at the Eliot launch at 5:30 AM, tide still outgoing. There was a lot of fish showing in the main channel, some of them looked to be pretty good size. But there was very little on the shore, that is, until we got to the old house off Wood Is. There were fish on the surface. Not a blitz, but some pretty good ones here and there. My buddy, Pete, landed and released one 35". Then we found quite a bit of bird activity outside of Pepperell Cove and caught a few more on sinking lines in that area, until about 9 AM. Then we went around into Little Harbor and up the river. We met an old friend, who had done fairly well on top water poppers in the river and was leaving to beat the coming rain. All-in-all, it was a pretty good day.

From a bit earlier Before Capt John headed into southern waters.

I'm starting to think we are going to miss the typical fall run this season. There is no sign of peanut bunker anywhere. The only bait around is our small 2" herring and even those are limited. Fish are schooling up and I am finding large pods of small fish but only taking a few fish and the rest shut right off. No surface activity to speak of, I'm looking through my log of last season and the peanuts showed up on the 16th (and that is late for us). The upper bays were on fire with fish through around the 25th. Today is the 17th and no sign of bait anywhere. This week we did run into an acre of 8-10lb bluefish off Richmond Island feeding on tinker macks but they kept moving south and have not been back all week. I'm trying to keep the faith in hopes of peanuts making a show but it does not look good.....will let you know.
