Arrived at West Wall just after sunup this AM. A fairly breezy North to NE wind made it tough for this right-hander to make decent casts, so I stuck with spinning.

I finally broke the ice there on funny fish this season with a 3-4 lb albie caught on a 3/4 oz white Spro jig. I say funny because it felt like an old tire coming in with hardly the drag-burning runs I normally get with FA. In fact, I thought I'd foul-hooked it or caught a big fluke that refused to come up. But sure enough, it was a legally hooked albie just acting "funny" ;);

Also saw a 4-5 lb bone and another tunoid caught by flyfishermen, but that was it for the morning there. All action was on the outside and very few pods were breaking. Blind casting was the rule.

Tried various Narragansett shore spots. Nothing but vast quantities of snapper blues. Also tried Sakonnet Pt jetty in afternoon. Again, nothing but hordes of snapper blues and loads of scup. Kids were having a field day on those two species...

bdowning,
Glad to hear you scored on an albie. I fished the West Wall today also. I arrived at around 12:30 and fished until about 7:00 this evening. I hooked up twice but was broken off both times. Next weekend I will fish with a 12lb to 15lb tippet instead of the 10lb I used today. The entire time there I saw only one fish landed, a beautiful albie about 10lbs. Maybe we will run into each other next week in South County.

10 # tippet was probably getting cut off by the albies teeth.

try the 15 or even 20

I used to use 12 lb until this year, but had too many cutoffs in past. Now I use 15 lb with a 3 foot 20 lb fluoro shock leader albrighted onto the 15. So far, no problems, but a 4 lb albie isn't much of a test either ;);

Fished the Wall from 3:00pm - 6:30pm yesterday with nothing much going on. Only saw one fish break. I heard some fish were taken in the morning. I also spoke with a gentleman who told me as he was buying lobster in Point Judith a lobsterman told him that they get their bait from a fish trap at the center wall that has been catching "thousands of false albacore". Does anyone know if this is true?

there has been a fish trap near east wall (near pt jude light) for a while, no confirmation if it contains albies - would be disturbing if it did

can confirm, unfortunately, bparsons report of little luck on the south coasts this weekend, ran same route and fished same locations, weather weird, nada on ocean drive and second beach also....practically no bait compared to recent levels...

according to this guy I met it does contain albies to the tune of at least 30 barrels full that will be used for lobster bait.
