View Full Version : Scaling down Tuna lures?

I started fly fishing and tying last year and have a question about a new type of fly I'm considering. I am not sure what they are called, but I have seen offshore Tuna lures that are essentially a painted boat bumper with a lure tied several inches behind it. The bumper causes a lot of commotion diving in and out of the water when trolled at high speed. The lure which is an appropriate size for the intended fish benefits from these splashes which it could not make with it's own mass. My questions is whether there are any existing fly patters for applying this concept to flyfishing? I will be targeting Bonito and False Albacore with an 8wt rod. My thought was to use a foam popper bodies as the "bumpers" and tie various sized Bonito Bunnies and the like behind them as the target.

Am I totally off base here or does anyone have thought on how this might work?

Thanks,

Sam Riley

Sam

You may not be totally off, but keep in mind you will need to cast this creation. Having 2 item close to each other is a recipe for tangles of Biblical proportion.

I would consider tying a popper type fly. Lots of action and easy to cast.

Actually, since last year was the first time I tried flyfishing, I got lots of practice untying wind knots. I'll let you know how they work out.

Thanks Ray

I'm pretty sure that you may be discribing something very similar to Bob's Banger by Bob Popivics. It can be found in many of the major saltwater fly pattern books, I,ve tied it and left the large foam head loose, this makes changing the size or color easy and you can carry a variety of heads with you. You may be able to slide the head up the leader and lock it in place with a piece of toothpick or something similar, Hope this helps, MURF

It does appear that all the good ideas really have been taken. Sounds like this is what I am looking for. I'll have to check it out.

Thanks Murf

Sam, I think you'll find that in fly tying, it HAS all been done before! I have yet to find a true "Original" design in modern fly tying. That's what makes it so much fun, the never ending search for originality, it can be a lifelong persuit or an obsession. MURF

sounds to me that it is time to put away the fly rod and get out some light conventional gear. I would suggest making a daisy-chain out of B-2 squids and trolling them at 7 knots. You will catch far more fish this way. Also try casting a small Gibbs pencil popper in chartruce and white to busting fish on 10# test spinning gear.
