Nathan

I just returned from Christmas Island. Here are my thoughts:

1. try to schedule your trip during or right after the full moon.

2. there is a constant easterly wind. Thus, most of the fishing will be in the morning because in the afternoon either the sun is in your eyes or you have to cast into a strong wind.

3. try to get the tide charts before you book your trip. The best fishing occurs during the incoming tide, thus you want to fish when high tide is around midday, so that the entire morning you have both the wind and sun at your back, as well as a incoming tide.

4. bring plenty of lead-eye flies. Although much of the water is very shallow, the wind will tend to blow your fly line around and thus drag your fly.

5. if you have one, bring an extra long rod (9'6" or even 10'). Many of the flats have sharp coral heads that will cut up your leader. With a longer rod, you can keep the leader out of the water as much as possible while fighting your fish.

6. bring a heavier rod (10-12 wt) with flashy poppers or large green/white baitfish patterns for trevally.

When are you going to be there? I am going first week of July, staying at Big Eddie's.
