My current 9wt a LLBean quest rod which was part of introductory package is broken. Eventually I'll get it back to them for repair/replacement.
However I athought this might be a good excuse to get something a little better.
I was considering Cabelas FT series 9wt $230
or St Croix legend Ultra series 9wt $300

Bob...The St. Croix Ultra Legend is a beautiful stick...Not too stiff...Not too whippy...Good reserve power...super nice finish...*nice price* for a lifetime guarantee rod.....

I'll second Jeff's comments. I fished one with a intermediate Triangle Taper and thought it was great. Easy to cast, nice sensitivity, not too stiff to catch small-medium sized fish (unfortunately didn't get to test it on any big boys...)
Bob,
I have the Legend Ultra 9X9 and love it. I've had everything from tarpon to cuda to jacks to stripers & blues. No albies or bones yet. No complaints, in fact I love it.
I am looking at 8 weights and would suggest you also look at the Redington Saltwater (I think it's a faster rod) or the Orvis Silver label TL.
Good luck.

Thanks guys.
I have a St Croix rod for my spinning rig and I go for the St Croix fly rod.

I'm sure you will be pleased with the St. Croix Legend rod. I built one from a blank alst winter, a 9 wt. I use 10 wt full lines and 11 wt SH's on it. It performs well.

I built a 10wt on the cabela's ft blank. It's very stiff. I use orvis depthcharge 350 grain most of the time and it casts fantastically. I also use cortland 444sl 10wt big game intermediate, which is a bit light for it unless it's all long casts. If you get the ft 9wt I recommend a 250 or maybe 300 grain line. They are very good on returns. they will just send you a new one no questions asked. I broke the tip off of mine right after I made it and they sent me all the parts again even after I told them "i just broke it". It's very light, the same weight as a g loomis. Cabela's also sells most of the other brands too so you can't really go wrong whatever you get because of their return policy.
