Hello,

I am a novice who is looking to venture to Narragansett and Point Judith this season to fish from shore. I know half the fun is scouting out the good spots but I would appreciate any suggestions on places to try this May for striper fishing and throughout the summer for Bluefish etc.

Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Well if you plan on picking up fishing and want to try there you're in luck. That region is perfect for a beginner. I'm not sure what type of fishing you're interested in but anywhere along Narragansett Town Beach down to the mouth of the Narrow River is great. Sprague Bridge on both sides is a good early season spot. Try Gallilee in Salt Pond, that can be fun in the early parts of the year. You are right though, half the battle is scouting out areas that you like.

Good luck.

There are a lot of great spots, but some can be dangerous and are not meant for a newcomer. My advice: before you tempt the rocks, fish the beaches for a while first. Before you fish at night, fish in the day until you are completely familiar with your equipment. Stinky Beach at the north end of Scarborough is very good in addition to the previously mentioned Narragansett Town Beach. If you are going to try the avenues (Newton, Hazard, Bass Rock) get yourself a pair of Korkers and a self inflating emergency life vest like S.O.S Suspenders or the like. Korkers are available at any full service tackle shop; the emergency vest is available at West Marine and places like that. Almost everyone who has every got swept off the rocks at Hazard Ave in the last twenty years (and there have been plenty) was inexperienced. Consider joining a club and hooking up with someone who knows what they are doing, it can shave years off the learning curve. Asking questions first and fishing later tells me that you have some sense. Welcome to the sport!
