5-11: Canal live/deadlining crew does OK...

I, Thunder Rod, and party (Jim, Jay, and Rocky) hit the Canal today. Thunder and crew had a very slow start in the AM at a spot east of the herring run, so we switched to the west end spot where Thunder and I had done well in the first outing. That spot also started out very slow and the baking hot sun with little wind didn't help matters (this is May??). We all started looking like poster children for skin cancer warning ads. But finally, little by little into the west tide, they started to hit.

I broke the ice with a just-over legal and Jay was high-hook for the day with a 32 incher. The rest were schoolies from 20-27 inches. Not the success in numbers/sizes of our first outing but an enjoyable day nonetheless...

Are you fishing either side of the herring run or are you spreading out more and fishing the other side as well?

Actually, we avoided the run itself. There are several rips and back eddys between there and the Sag Bridge which are pretty obvious on a rising tide, so we tried those. We did not fish the side of the Canal opp. the herring run.

It turned out, however, that the area around the herring run wasn't very crowded at mid-day on a Friday. I'm sure today will be another story.

I drove by the canal herring run today. Not sure there was a parking place to be had.

Not sure when I'm going to be able to get back down there. Kinda busy this weekend and next.....looks like it'll be bike patrol the next time, perhaps Memorial Day weekend. I suppose we'll be seeing ya around all your usual haunts in the ditch before long, eh Bill?

I've already stored away my live wells. I got exactly 3 dozen herring from my 20 punch Wareham permit before they closed it down this year. Back to the 10 punch next year!
