I had a very strange encounter yesterday afternoon with a small school of bass. I was fishing one of my favorite spots in a back water bay that had been hot with bass the prior two days. I figured I'd chunk some herring as it worked great over the weekend. I was looking out into the water and saw 5-6 bass all around 35" swimming back and forth right in front of me. I tried the chunks and every plug in my box but these fish would not hit. They wouldn't spook either even when I casted a plug right over them. Any ideas why these fish weren't interested in my offerings?

Were you in a salt pond/esturary....??? They might have zeroed in on a "worm hatch"....??? Tough to get them to take anything if they want the worms...??

I had a similar situation in Nantucket several years ago at the mouth of one of the ponds near great point. There were hundreds of bass rolling on the surface, and none of them were interestede in lures or flies--- because of the worm hatch that was in progress. They ended up swimming right past us as we stood there in our waders--totally amazed and disappointed!!

I don't beleive the fish were onto a worm hatch, I have fished this area fow several years and haven't seen a worm hatch there. Do bass spawn in this area? Some of the fish that come from the south do so before they spawn. I have cleaned some loaded with eggs. These fish reminded me of largemouth bass when they are spawning. Swimming slowly and not hitting anything.
