View Full Version : grocery fly pattern?
I believe this is a fly I saw at Hunters. I had the formula but lost it. Can anyone help me with this pattern. I did check web sites mentioned but didn't see it.
Thanks, Bogs

As far as I know the grocery fly started out as one pattern and became more of a general type of fly like a deceiver or a clouser minnow. The one in the Hunter's catalog doesn't bare much of a resemblance to the original. I think there might be a picture of something like the original by Brock Apfel in Lefty Kreh's book on saltwater patterns. Most grocery flies are made like big deceivers with schlappen and bucktail. If you are interested in how to tie the fly in the Hunter's catalog then email me and I will come pretty close since I tie a lot of flies like these.

Get a copy of the book Flyfishing for Striped Bass by Brad Burns & LL Bean; in it you will find the original (and still the greatest) pattern for grocery flies as designed by Brock Apfel.
Thanks for all the help on the grocery fly.
I think I've got it! Bogs
