I used to fish a good deal out in Montauk, but I am not out east as often as I would like, and was interested in trying to fish a little closer to home (south Westchester). I used to fish the western sound from City Island party boats as a kid, but have not been back in years. I cannot ever remember seeing someone fly fishing from shore during those periods. I also have never fished the Hudson, so I am unfamiliar with what it offers.
Any recommendations on where to get started? No boat, so I would be looking for areas that have public access to the shore.

I've been pondering the same question. I live in Manhattan and am getting tired of the 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive out to my favorite Connecticut shore spots. I was thinking that I would try Pelham Bay Park, in the Bronx. Any one out there have any feedback on my (creative) idea?
gbloss, let's you and I trade notes as we prospect for Westchester area spots. I will say that I don't believe Playland in Rye offers anything. I found a few other city parks nearby, but they restricted access to town residents.

I actually fished Playland during the incoming tide at sunup this morning. Caught a cocktail blue that was just as suprised to see me as I was to see it. It was pretty quiet and a relaxing way to start the day, but other than that, I agree, not much action. I may gave it a couple of more tries as it is pretty convenient.
Let me know what happens at Pelham Bay and I'll let you know if I can find anything else worth fishing. Any thoughts on Orchard Beach as well?

not sure where your at or how far it is to Long Island, but here's a good map feature on Long Island's south shore:
