Heading out there within the next few weeks. Anyone have any first hand information on the fishing action? Will be bringing my boat.
Thanks,
Tom

It's tough to say. Your posting says your going out there in the next few weeks. 1 week? 2 weeks? 4 weeks? Generally it's slow in early August unless your going to jig. Give me some dates and I'll send you specific info.

Ok,
Let's say the last week of July or the first week of August. Did a trip last year around that time I believe, where we diamond jigged a mother load of big blues. Would have been fun except we were using broom sticks and 30lb test....not my idea, but being a guest, what could I do. Don't mind jigging, but this time it will be with lighter tackle. Any thoughts and words of wisdom would be great MAKO20, as I have never run my boat in this location. Will be coming from central Jersey, near StatenIsland.
Thanks,
Tom

Tommat-
First, at that time of year I'm a big believer in early morning starts, ideally at dawn. Even more so if theres a nice tide ripping through the Gut. If early is no good, try late afternoon/evening (I can't tell you the amount of times I've taken the ferry on a Sunday night back to CT and gone through a school of breaking fish. It drives me nuts!);
I've never jigged the gut, not that I'm opposed to it, just never learned the proper technique. I've always fished light tackle and Flies and done very well. I've had morning in the Gut where you could walk back to shore on fishes backs.
Generally, you'll see a ton of boats in the ferry lane, jigging. The water is very deep there, obviously, so I've always fished the stretch between the lighhouse and Orient Point. Surface plugs and jelly baits always work, as do large bunker flies at that time of year.
Also, if its your boat, don't just limit yourself to the Gut. Try around Plum Island, The Race and the Ruins.
I'm not sure about a boat launch. I think the State Park at the end of Route 25 in Orient near the ferry may have one.
Good Luck.
