When speaking of the "tuniods" as you call them, there is one that is never mentioned. That's the Giant. He is not only the grand daddy of the tunas, but of all salt water gamefish. Don't know if you guys know, but "he is here now". He is hunting too, for the same stuff that we are all bragging about. "He is here now", at what offshore fisherman call "the 700 square", an area 20 miles due south of Montauk point.

He is the top of the food chain. He is following the commercial draggers because he knows they dump their by-catch overboard just for him. Everything is for him. He is the top of the chain with nothing to fear.

He is very fast and very powerful. Take a fat albert's length and multiply it by 10 to understand the speed of a Giant, knowing that every type of tuna lives within it's own scale of things. He didn't get that big because he couldn't catch his prey. He is deadly.

When an albie runs, you hold your rod high, and thrill at the speed of the little handle spinning. When the Giant runs, you better have the rod bolted to the boat so you are safe from being taken off your feet in a blink of an eye.

When you feel that albie come at you, you reel like crazy to pick up the slack. When a Giant comes at you, you put the boat up on plane and reel like a madman. If he keeps coming straight at you, you are in trouble if you don't get out of his way. I've been on plane at 24 knots, with the crew reeling like crazy for five minutes without knowing if he is still on. Then he veers off 10 or 20 degrees and the line gradually tightens again. And when it does tighten, the rod strains and under a full 70 lbs of drag. Now that's a fish. They are here now, hunting the same fish you are. I thought you should know about some of your competition. Howie

Indeed, he is here now, let the hunt begin. I had the chance this week to actually present an assortment of lures to these bad boys, but was under represented in the cranking department with only Penn 30's and 50's. I made the mistake of leaving the fish......"Never leave the fish"....Having put Makaira in the log book recently....The page now turns and is blank, waiting to welcome the Giant.
