Did no in shore fishing fly fishing this past weekend. Tried to hook up with Josh on Friday when I got out but couldn't reach him. He was already fishing. I had to do some tackle rigging anyway. We did fish offshore, but on the way out on Saturday at 10:00 am, and on the way in on Sunday 5:00 pm I noticed no activity at Shagwong that would interest any of us.

We did crush them offshore at Atlantis on Saturday night. The satalite temp charts showed a big break over Veatch and Atlantis so that's where we went. Long trip but it paid off. The tails, dip, hudson were all blended warm water. At Atlantis there were no boats, just fish. It's a long way and most don't do it. Just about 4 to 6 boats total out there. Most from Rhode Island or the islands. I know there was one other boat from Montauk.

Went 4 for 7 with "huge" yellowfin all but one at least 100 pounds and over. Yellows are the strongest tuna for their size, with rattling head shakes and long bursting runs that sometimes go straight down putting you into some awkward positions. Also took two 45-50# long fins and all the 5-15# mahi you never wanted. They are as painful sometimes as bluefish.

The biggest fish was fought by Scott Follet, and avid offshore angler from Cold Spring Harbor who also at times, enjoys fly fishing. He beat this fish within 20 minutes and actually brought him in green. What a tough fight, especially on the no stretch spectra which this special rod was loaded with. What a brutal fight.

At boat side, Greg Notine, an 'extreme' blue water fisherman hit the fish with our biggest gaff and almost went airborne. He bent a right angle in the shaft handle as the fish ripped around the corner of the transom. I'm talking about a milled heavy duty aircraft aluminum shaft. It took two big guys with two big gaffs to subdue this fish and bring him over. My hat's off to both Scott and Gregg. Great fish. Great work.

Getting back to fly fishing, came back Sunday through the inshore blue fin grounds. Didn't see any action. Did hear that they had a 'fair' school blue fin bite at the mudhole, which is south of Block. That could be fun when the weather is calm and the fish get thick. Just chunk them into your slick and cast the biggest clouser deciever on a sink tip line. It also happens at the 700 square off the point in late mid to late September. Great fun for those of you who have a slightly bigger boat like a 21 plus vee hull.
