For the first time in many years I'm told big bunker are here in Western Connecticut. This is very good news in general, but hard on us fly fishers. I've had my best luck with a big, broad deceiver-like fly (4/0), and then I slide a foam popper body right over the leader in front of it. It's tough to cast, and I usually end up trolling it with my kayak. And I did manage to tempt a 15 pound blue the other day with it. Any other techniques, flies recommended when the big boys are chopping 14-16" menhaden to pieces? Has anyone ever tried something like an Alaskan "flesh fly," which they use when the salmon start decomposing, I believe? I'll keep experimenting, and any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. This saltwater game is new to me.
