Was out in Montauk today for an annual trip where I rent a boat at Uhleins with friends. The Noreaster appears to have had a major impact at Montauk as there were no blitzes, no bass, no albies, no blues. What a difference a week makes. The sand is still in the process of settling down. I heard there was major loss of beach at Ditch Plains, behind town and at Hither Hills. My friends who got out Tuesday afternoon spoke of a clearly visible line of dirty versus clean water. One can optimistically hope that things will settle down, however it would seem to me that this storm may have had the same impact of Hurricane Floyd, etc. in 1999 and we may have seen the last good rainbait fishing at the Point for the year. Who knows.

So, after spending the morning doing nothing at Montauk, went to Gardiners. Found cocktail blues and albies in the general vicinity of Eastern Plains Point. The fly charter boats were in this general area (there were none at Montauk) and it made me feel like I was at least in the right place. (I also saw some boats head toward Great and Little Gull Island). There were a decent amount of albies around at times and, at times, they disappeared. Pretty small cocktail blues were up and down all afternoon and tended to be working close to shore, chasing rainbait at first and then peanut bunker. The three of us each got one or two albies and plenty of the blues. At one point, noticed a fairly large crab hatch.

All in all, not quite the trip I was expecting given my experience a week or so ago. It makes me laugh at prior questions about whether the Montauk run could go to late October/November.
