View Full Version : Best 10 WT reel for the money
I figured I'd post this question here since the tackle board doesn't see much action and you guys fish where I do. There are so many high quality reels now it's hard to choose. I'm looking for a new reel for a 10 wt. Preferably large arbor. What do you guys prefer? Thanks.

What price range?
Let's say $450 for the reel and extra spool for $200. That would be about $650 compared to about $1000 for an Abel Super 10. Abel's are great reels, but I don't need to pay an extra $400 bucks for their guide program and sponsorship of John Barrett.
I've never used their saltwater reels, but a buddy has a trout model that's pretty nice. I was looking at the Canyon Big Game #5. Anybody use one? I can get a reel and spool for $375+150. Almost half an Abel.

No complaints with my Teton Tioga.

I have had the same question.
Check out http://www.anglers-pro.com, they bought the older model abels and are selling them at a slight discount to prior list. They are not wide arbor, but as far as I know the new spools (super series) will fit onto these reels.

Lamson LP-4, and throw a hundreds yards of #50 spectra on it. (This is way under your price guide but it is a great value).
It would seem to be a question of how much you want to spend. After several years of fishing with a Sci Angler System 2, I recently sucked it up and got a Tibor Everglades after having a wild day last fall in Montauk where the drag on the Sci. Angler kind of blew up after repeated albies and large bass. So far am happy with the Tibor.
After spending time looking at reels, my opinion is as follows: there are plenty of great reels in the $150-200 price range available such as the Teton Tioga, I think Redingtons are popular, etc., but if you are willing to spend alot more on a reel (as I was), you may as well go the whole distance and get the Tibor or Abel.
The Redington looks like a great deal. Who has used these for albies and bass? Thanks.

Bought a Ross Canyon 5 for my 10 wt. about three months ago. I have been very happy with the reel. I also have two Ross Gunnison 5's which I have had for several years (use them on my 8 wts.) and they have performed flawlessly.
One of my friends also has a Canyon 5 and recently caught a nice albie at Montauk. He thought the drag was extremely smooth.
I have several other higher priced reels which are also great but for the price you can't beat Ross. The reels are light, the finish and fit is excellant, the drags work well and the spools are easy to change. I often fish four or five times a week and just hose my rods off after each trip and put them in the back of my car. The two Gunnisons still look and perform as well as they did when they were brand new.
You might want to take a look at the New England board as there has been a fairly extensive discussion on Redingtons in the past few days.

Bige- I hav ebothe the Redington, Ross and also tje (big) Isalnder 4.5- I'm considering selling the Islander for another Ross (I bought the #4 and #5 this spring) and find them EXCELLENT, especially for the price. Have caught some albies on both, and never even thought about the drag failing. They're also starting to make a larger size for the spring- a #7, for heavier/larger arbor set-ups. I could theoretically sell the Islander and spool and buy both the #6 and the #7 for less- great deals and great reels- Bob

Saw a reel at the dock this year that blew me away. The name was "Old Florida Reels". It was shown to me by a professional mate on tournament sport fisher. He said it was the on the market today for the money. It was polished aluminum, smooth as silk, and are reely great looker with a great finish. A great palming spool, held a lot of line, and these guys fish for big stuff from big bones to wahoo. He had them in several sizes from 6 wieghts to 14 wieghts. He prefered them to all the Ables he had on moth balls. They cost under 200 bucks for the normal sizes up to 10s. I am thinking of buying one or two. They look really sweet and have a life time guarrantee.
Their website is www.oldfloridareels.com
Anyone out there heard about them and can share information about themg about them??????????????
