Wow, I thought this would be a hot board, but it seems pretty dead. Its really a great idea for us travelling fishermen.

Anyway, last Easter break I travelled to Puerto Rico with my family. We stayed at Las Palmas, on the SE coast. We caught some beauty snook in the surf right in front of the resort, and some nice big jacks too. This year we're staying at the El Conquisatdor, and I wonder if anyone has fished in this area.

Muchas Gracias

I stayed at El Conquistador the first week of February on business. The light tackle guide there injured his wrist, so I was on my own. The resort has a private island that people swim on, but there's a coral reef that attracts fish (and snorkeler's - I ran into a barracuda while snorkeling!) Anyway, I did catch several jacks of some sort in the surf on an eight weight w/poppers, but be forewarned that since the resort is on the east side of the island the wind will be persistent! Apparently north of the area are mangrove areas, but I never got to see them. I didn't have enough time to truly explore the area, but was told that snook, tarpon, bonefish, etc are all in the area. I did see yellowtail snappers while snorkeling and caught numerous small fish of various types on clousers, but nothing truly interesting. Just plan ahead and contact the resort; let me know if you have any luck!

Lorenzo,

Thanks for the reply. When you mention mangroves "to the north", do you mean on the private island or on the main island. I 'm encouraged by your report, I think things will be more active in the spring.

Well, Palomino was pretty cool! My limo driver left the rod tube in my driveway, so fishing wasn't our first priority. I finally went out and bought a couple of new rods, but nothing great to report. My young son caught some scads, and we livelined them to the big ol baracuda next to the ferry dock, but he was pretty wary. One time I waded out towards him and lobbed out the bait. The bait came back and tried to hide between my legs, and the hook caught in my swimsuit, Mr B in hot pursuit! Yikes!

There's a couple of small flats at each end of the island, but I didn't see anything to catch there, except for a small shark. We saw lots of jacks and baracudas while snorkeling, but couldn't catch any.

Oh well, we had a great time.
