Planning to spend a week in the Keys or southern Louisiana in mid to late May. Any thoughts as to the species and tempo of the fishing in either place? We will be flyfishing if that makes a difference and have no desire to go way offshore, prefer flats or channels. In advance, thanks!

I spent a few days fishing with a guide in the northern Keys at this time of year back in '89 and caught plenty of bones. Also landed a nice tarpon and had several shots at a feeding permit that refused to co-operate.

Have fished the Keys many times. You will love it. Late May is not a bad time for fly fishing but I found June best. Many tarpon available plus permit, bonefish, redfish and trout. Those tarpon will blow your mind! Can be a lot of southbound fish in May but more northbounders and less wind in June. Get some practice in with a 12 weight before you go. An 8 weight is all you need for everything else.If you need any more info , good guides, motels etc. post another reply and I will let you know who I fish with and where I have stayed. Have a great trip.
