Howdy again,
I am all torn up here trying to decide between two really good deals on rods I want but have never thrown. Found a Diamondback Saltwater for almost half price and then today when I decided to buy it I find a St. Croix Legend Ultra on sale with free fly line. It all makes my head hurt. Are these Diamondback SW's all really worth $455 regular price, and why have they been discontinued, I wonder? What would happen if I broke the thing and they didn't have any more to replace it with? I've read good stuff stuff about the LU's, but info on Diamondback seems to be scarce around here. I'm leaning toward the LU, but may not be totally objective in this decision as they are so sharp looking. Any objectivity is certainly welcome here..
Also, is the Ross Cimmaron worth a hoot for light saltwater? It sure is less expensive than the Gunnison..

Never owned a St Croix rod, or Ross reel. I do own two Diamondback Backwater fly rods. A third one is on the way. Diamondback is owned by Cortland. If you have any trouble with the rod it will cost you $10 to get it fixed. They gave me a new rod last year, no problem. I would cast both before spending money.

Have you looked at the latest issue of Flyfish America. It has testing of the travel 8-9wt rods. Personally I would go with the LU. I think the Diamonbacks are a little slower but haven't tested one in 8-9wt range before.

Wow, I'll have to try a St Croix tomorrow at Wilmington. The first two words that come to my mind with the Diamondback backwater rods are "fast" + "cannon".

Stumpknocker:

I've had a Diamondback Saltwater rod for three years now and have been very happy with it. I have no idea why this model was discontinued, but I think that you'll find that most companies change their model lines after a few years anyway (Orvis Trident TL)
The Saltwater is a fast action rod, which I am able to cast much better than a mid-flex on windy days.
I've had mine doubled over by Yellowfin tuna and never had a problem with it. I'd say if you have the chance to get one for 1/2 price- go for it!!
