View Full Version : Ted Williams on OLN

Don't know if NE gets the cable show OLN, but I've been seeing some cool fishing shows on it here in NJ cable land.

Last night there was an inteview with Ted Williams, focusing not on his baseball career, but his salt water fly fishing.

In addition to some interesting conversation, there were some great old videos of him bonefishing, tarpon fishing and fishing for atlantic salmon. Most were black and white (although one of the few color ones showed a really nice school of small tarpon on the flats) and the ones of him catching 6 to 8 pound bonefish on a bamboo rod with a reel that looked like it would freeze and melt at the same time were incredible.

If you all get OLN, the fishing shows come on from time to time during the weekend, but during the week it looks like fishing everyday at 7:30 PM. Last week I got my first glimpse of Monomoy on OLN (don't worry, the part I saw showed some folks landing some small schoolies and a medium blue, so it probably won't create an exodus from NJ and LI flats fishermen).

Shoot! I watch sporadically but always miss the good ones (ie ted williams, striper fishing, etc...) There is also a show at 6:30. I'll have to check out the 7:30 one.

I saw that show a few months ago on OLN, and I agree, it was really pretty good. There was also one with Bobby Knight trout fishing...he really does have a gorgeopus cast. I used to go to Indiana University, and I can't ever remember seeing asmile on that man's face...until I saw him fishing for trout. My favorite show on OLN though is Sportsman with Andy Mill. He's always bonefishin or fly fishing for Jacks, Tarpon, stripers...the guy lives the ultimate lifestyle

I like where Andy fishes but sometimes it seems he has a bit of an attitude that gets on my nerves. Just my .02

Thanks Fishboy (for pointing out the 6:30 show).

I, um, found that I could leave work early yesterday and it had a show on Ascension Bay (the last out of country fishing I did, although we hit Espiritu Santu also on the same trip). Great show and really brought back memories of my time there (pulled my fly away from a giant tarpon [my guide really loved that], caught my second permit and watched my brother Jim battle and land a big permit after a one and three quarter hour fight).

What channel is OLN and is it available in New England?

For me (I'm on mediaone cable in Mass) its #40.

I get it on DSS Satellite...I'm not sure what channel. It's a great channel though...that and speed vision. Sportsman is good, and I agree, sometimes Andy can get annoying, but the fishing is intense. I also love watching Henry Waschuck and Italo on Canadian Sport fishing..those two are the biggest twits around, absorbing afternoon tv action for sure. I also used to watch some show from New Zealand that was quite fun. The guy always eats his fish...never throws them back.

Being the fishing show junky that I am, here are the times to catch some good fishing shows. OLN (MediaOne channel 27 in Milton) has fishing shows every night from about 5:30 to 8:00. Andy Mills (I agree he is annoying), Trevor Gowdy, Lots of Candian shows (I love the one where they show the structure of the lakes) can be found on them. Saturday mornings from 6:00 AM to 12:00 PM is the fishing show apex. OLN has shows as well as ESPN. Hunting shows are sprinkled in here and there (I really like Hunting with Hank) as well.
Sunday mornings ESPN2 has fishing shows from 6:00 Am to about 10:00 AM. If you get lucky, every once and a while Andy, the guy from Spanish Fly, Gowdy (he did a two part show with Jim Beluschi where the caught large stripers off of MV , or others make it up to New England for a show. However, I have yet to see a show in New England targeting anything else but stripers. A good NE bonito show would be grat.

Fall River media one has the channel and its #27.

The outdoor life network has a web sight. Do a search for it and you'll find it quickly. You can find out when all the fishing show's are on as well as any other show.

I watch the channel frequently. Every once in a while they have fishing from new england. It's cool seeing the guys catching strippers and blues in the same places you fish.

They cover fishing very well and have tons of shows and time slots.

Friday night 8pm to 11pm or Sat morning 7am 12 noon is field and stream; fishing and hunting

Every weeknight they have fishing/hunting programs on from 5pm to 8pm.

I usually watch fishing from canada and andy mill during the week. It's on when i'm working out. I also catch some of the field and stream show's on the weekend. They are hosted by andy mill.

I think the fishing show's on the outdoor life network are much better than the show's on ESPN. Although the spanish fly is pretty cool.
