Hi All,

I just want to start SWFF and about to purchase Penn International fly rod. Anybody have good advice on this rod?
If this is a good rod, what weight should I start with? 8 or 9 wt? Should I overline it and what kind of line should I use? Your advice is really much appreciated.

Thanks

I have the 9', 9wt., 2 piece. It is a fine rod and much better than the current model offered by Penn which they call the "Gold Medal." The International is no longer offered by Penn so you will need to look around a bit. I have seen them for sale on ebay from time to time.

My rod is a fast action with a fairly stiff tip and I use it for heavy sinking lines like a Teeney TS-250 and TS-350. It handles these lines nicely without turning to spaghetti!

Good luck finding one. It will be worth the trouble.

abrahman- I will echo Bill's comments on the Penn International. I have a 10wt and find it great for the heavy sinking lines like Teeny, etc. I had to overline it for fishing at nite due to its fastness. What I didn't know was that Penn had discontinued the line. The Gold Medal(which i have also in 10wt) is a medium fast rod, but lacks in the lifting ability that the International excels in. Ron
PS I'm looking to sell the International I have. Email if you're interested. Sueron69@aol.com
