I am looking at purchasing a 6 weight Redington Classic rod. I have used 9' 4 weight, 6 weight abd 9 weight rods. Can anyone offer advice / experience using the 9'6" and or 10' rods on large rivers ( Merrimack, NH and Penobscott & Kennebeck , Maine), for trout and smallmouth?

Thom,
I don't have any experience on those rivers, but I can tell you this- in most cases, the longer the rod, the more physically demanding it is to cast over the course of the day. If most of your outings are relatively short, you'll be fine. But, if you fish all day, the longer rods may tire you out before you are done.
Mr Fisherman- I have used a 91/2 footer before and didn't see much difference in the amount of fatigue experienced, but the same model rod in 9' was stiffer than one of 91/2' which probably helped with the casting and definitely with line control. As for the longer single handed rods I had a problem after only a short time due to the weight of the equipment needed to balance the rod. For my money if I were going to use a rod over 91/2' I'd switch to a 2-handed rod with the Euroean action(alittle faster than traditional spey). Just my $.02. Ron

You have more line control with a longer rod...especially if you're doing a lot of nymphing....
Long rods also protect tippets nicely....Fatigue will not be a problem.....I can cast a 10' rod all day ...and I do.
but I don't think you can go wrong with a 9' rod either.
If you plan on nymphing or even a little steelheading go with a longer rod...A 10 ft 6 wt would be a light great steelhead rod too.
