I would very much appreciate any advise for the appropriate flies to use, depending on the stage of the season for RI waters. I am a transplant from CT, where I spent the many years learning the waters, the bait migrations, and patterns, but RI has proven to be very different, and for an "old veteran" very frustrating. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thansk much.

First I would, if you already haven't, take a short ride to The Saltwater Edge in Newport. The guys there can give you the lowdown on local flies.

I like the Ray fly, a RI standard, the Razzle Dazzle and Bonderew Bucktail. In the spring have plenty of Herring patterns.

My favorite pattern, because of tradition in RI, and because it WORKS is the Gibbs Striper Fly. See OTW April 2002 for a description. It is a traditional fly, and it is a great silverside imitation. It is fast passing the clouser as the most productive striper fly for me. It works year round. Including the winter.

If you are going to fish the Narrow River Area don't forget the Bunnicula. Contact me if you want directions on tying this pattern.

Hey Ray

I know a lot of people who swear by the Ray's fly. The ones I tie are prone to fouling. Any tips on solving my problem?

Thanks

Ozzie
