View Full Version : Opinions advice on makes of fly reels

Gentlepeoples,

I have come seeking the advice/opinions on a few makes of fly reels. I am in the market for a fly reel that will suit my 9 wt. rod that I use to fish the MA and RI shorelines. They all share a few charecteristics. Price: all are in the $200.00 +/- range. All have a large arbor and all are from well known makers.
They are:

1. Cabela's SR Series Fly Reels
2. Teton Specialist Series Fly Reels
3. Old Florida Large Arbor
4. St. Croix Large Arbor
I did leave out a few other makes for various reasons. The Redington AL Series, Teton Trinity Series, and Okuma Large Arbor. All three I have tried but have found lacking in some respects. I intend for this reel to last for some time, not to replace it again 2-3years down the road. I will buy one reel and multiple spools.

So give me your advice, opinions, praise, derision, warnings, pros and cons. Or if you know of another make that fits the bill, fire away!

I would go with the Teton because they offer a warrenty. You may also want to consider Lamson.

Redington is replacing the AL series this May with a beautiful new cork drag LA reel...I have seen specs and photos and it looks like it will be a beaut--big cork drag, 7075 aluminum...great capacity...relatively light. A HUGE improvement over the AL series but at the same price level. Of the reels you name, I prefer Old Florida, but I would wait til the new Redington is available and at least inspect it thoroughly.

Iwould go with the Teton 8-10LA. At just under 8 oz., it will perfectly balance a 9x9 rod. Teton really stands by their product, they're at all the shows (and will answer any and all questions - with demonstrations), and they even give out free hats! Seriously, I've owned several, and they have been great.
