For my money, I wouldn't even bother with anything but a Lowrance. Something like the LMS 240 (http://www.lowrance.com/Marine/Products/LMS-240.asp) ought to do the trick.
I currently run an X-75 and love it. It replaced a two year old apelco 360 that couldn't find fish in a supermarket....I used to be an Apelco fan, but never again.
I've run a host of different depthsounders and short of color video, this is by far the best. They also have a color version (http://www.lowrance.com/Marine/Products/LCX-16CI.asp) which looks like the real state of the art. 8.5" x 6.5" size.
I'm using a Garmin 168 and I'm very pleased
