Am interested to know how important it will be to have a stripping basket. New to shore/surf fishing, any help is great.

Thanks

Here's an area a novice can get a feel for what they need while keeping the costs down.

Stripping basket is curtesy of RubberMaid at the local wally worlds with a couple holes drilled through and secured by a bungee cord.

Most useful when wadding or in a boat when the wind blows it on to the the smallest prejections that can catch your line. Of if you standing on a grassy bank that catches the line.

Modification to improve basket can come later.

I used to use one all the time. Now I never do. They are a neccessity though if you fish from a rock jetty, or a rocky area with barnacles.

i fished for the first time this year saturday. remembered to put everything in the canoe but my basket. i have a real hard time fishing without it. if your wading in even the slightest current as you strip your line it gets swept away. making for many more false casts. i started using one last year & won't leave home without it. even on a boat it keeps your line in order. it's amazing how much stuff your line will find if you just drop it on the deck.

IMHO, It's pretty darn important. As Bob said, even you just get a rubbermaid basket and a bungee cord, get one. As Dan said, while wading, the currents will take the line and you will never be able to shoot line and make a long cast. On a jetty or rock, the line will find something to catch on, and again you can't shoot. As mentioned, even in a boat they are a help. Remember that you are casting about 30 feet of line, and shooting the rest. A shooting basket is the easiest way to add 20 feet to your cast.

I have the old Orvis plastic basket and a mesh foldable one from Cortland that I like to use at night...and it is more comfortabe.

all reasonable suggestions....but i wouldn't drill any holes in the tub...you'll find that if you are deep wading, it's better to have the tub float on the water than get filled up.

my .02 cents

No holes. Used to drill em in my rubbermaid baskets and they would flood whenever I did any deep wading.

Phil Koenig at Manhattan Custom Tackle turned me onto a mini-basket a couple years ago. Also rubbermaid, just a smaller rectangular box -- about the size of an ammo box -- laced a wader belt through it, glue gunned some golf tees to the bottom -- and perfect, use it all the time and it is considerably less bulky than an Orvis or dish tub, useful when I'm moving around the boat.

In my humble opinion if you don't use a stripping basket you are wasting valuable fishing time. Not using a basket means you spend half your fishing time untangling your fly line, especially if you're using a sinking line. And as stated before a basket will enable you to cast considerably father. Nothing sucks more than to see a nice fish and not being able to cast to it because your line is caught on something.
