the canal is still worth a trip.
we fished the west end this morning. action was not furious. but, we had a fish or a run on almost every cast (live or dead herring).

after we ran out of herring by 6am, and i played around with plastics with no luck at all. that's strange?

i was hanging around the run, sort of watching the show yesterday. i saw perhaps a dozen bass taken up to 36".
i also saw a fisherman get his rod, and all his equipment taken by a town NRO. then he was issued a $50 ticket. the man was snagging herring right in the run, no permit.
from my vantage point, he appeared to have filled about 1/3 of his 5 gallon pail. oh yea, he lost the pail too.:)
on top of this, there were 2 plain clothes EPO's running around checking all the bass that were being kept.:)
I LOVE SEEING THE CANAL FINALLY GETTING ALL THIS ATTENTION!
perhaps now things might improve there.:)

Cool. I'm gonna try a quick hit on the morning west tide tomorrow AM.

Despite all the grumbling at the Ditch, even from regulars, about increased EPO/NRO presence, I see it as a net benefit. It's about time they put a stop to the nonsense that's gone on for years there during herring season, and enforcement's the only way IMHO. And for the guys who complain that there's no free reign at the Canal anymore and it's been ruined by lawmakers, I can only say two things: 1) It's not the 60s anymore and 2) What we sow, we shall reap.

It is nice to see them cracking down. However, I can name at least 5 other places (I'm sure most people can) that need the same attention. Unfortunately there are a lot of remote places on the cape to pull illegal fish.

somebody needs to explain to me how bourne has any authority over snagging herring in the canal itself  (not the mouth of the run)...to me, needing a permit to do that is a saltwater fishing license, plain and simple...

other than that i'm happy to hear about all the law enforcement types down there now...

If for no other reason you are in bourne, landing them on bourne soil which means a permit.
