Question about Monomoy for those more familiar. I spent a day with Randy Jones out there last year, and am going back on the 18th of this month. I was planning on taking my kayak and paddling out, but now I'm wondering if that is an advantage. Anyone more familiar with the area please offer your opinion. Paddle out and fish around, or take the shuttle boat out? Advantages/Disadvantages to either are welcome...thanks!

falsecast,

It's nice to have a kayak there because you can access some good flats spots that the ferry can't get to. At low tide there are some bars that come up that are only accessable by boat. Later on in the season when there are a hundred people fishing there it is nice to escape the crowds and access some of the remote spots. I usually tie the long rope around my waist and let the kayak float behind me while I wade around. You can also park it and walk over to the outer beach to fish the surf. It might take you a while to get out to where the ferry drops people off. I've never taken it so I'm not sure where it goes. Hope that helps.

I'll be out there with my kayak on the 18th as well. Pray for good weather. See you there!

I am interested in this now too....how long might it take to paddle out? How far? I have never been there either, but when I go I would want to bring the yak....

I am not sure if I could quess how long it would take since I have never paddled directly out. There are plenty of places to stop and fish along the way. If you spend a day fishing there, you can easily get out to the spots I marked on the attached map. You pass plenty of good fishing grounds on the way. This all depends on the weather of course. I have never been there on a really windy day.

Sandy...where do you suggest parking to put the boats in? On that map you posted, where does the route start?

If you are driving from the lighthouse to the Wildlife center you will go across a narrow strip of land on Morris Island Road. There will be a little cove with some boats on your left. Stage Harbor will be on your right. You can park along that narrow stretch of land and put your kayak in by the little cove. You can see this area on the map (in green) where the white route starts.

Oh boy... we're mapping game plans now too :) Here is my usual float plan for Monomoy. As Sandy said, plenty of fishy spots on the way out. Don't overlook the drop offs in the bowl section to the north and along the west side of South Beach. Current through the cut can be tough so land well before you get to it to check things out.

You guys are awesome! Thanks for all the info. If anyone wants to paddle around together for part of the day, drop me an e-mail.

I'll raise a glass tonight to you all and to tight lines and screaming reels!

Sandy, I saw a post from you about Manamoy and was wondering about how far the paddle is from a ramp? Also what ramp? I am, for the first time, going up to the Cape and bringing my new Yak. I'll be up there for the month of June. If I remember the paddle to South Beach would not be as far as Monamoy!!! True??? Good Luck and Catch Em.

the shuttle is very cheap and run by a great group of people I'll bet they would let you put the kayak on the boat and take you out. free parking there also if you take the shuttle.

it's also a short paddle if the tides are going the right way..

One thing to watch out for is the fog. Make sure that you have a deck mounted compass at the least. GPS would be most helpful. Once the fog rolls in you can't see in front of you and the powerboats won't be able to see you until the last minute. Stay out of the main channels . Those guys in the power boats really fly out there.

My photos and charts were linked from another site which I no longer subscribe to. I'll see if I can't whip up some new ones.

Monomoy is a perfect place to paddle. Pack plenty of water because it's not a 1 hour jaunt..this is a half day at the minimum. You can put in at Hardings if you have access, but I usually access at the Morris Island causeway. It's about 40 yards to the water from the road. You can enter from either side of the causeway...Stage or the Bathtub; it's your choice. From there it's about a 20-30 minute paddle to the northern tip of Monomoy. I like to bring an anchor so that I can hop off my yak to stalk the flats. When I stop seeing fish, I get back in the boat and paddle some more. Pack a lunch and a brew...you'll enjoy it on your private beach. This makes for an awesome day, but you'll be a little stiff by the time you get back to your car. One more thing, absolutely bring a compass and a GPS. Last year two women lost their lives when they became disoriented when the fog rolled into this exact area.

Got an e-mail that this thread had been revived and dug up the old diagrams at home. Good paddling to be had there...

Enjoy...
