I bought a clear int. Orvis Wonderline. Used it 4-5 times with no trouble. Yesterday I was using it and it suddenly became very tackey to the point I had to switch lines. Rats nest after rats nest. Any suggestions? I was told not to dress it... I loved the way this line performed until yesterday. Yesterday was a hot muggy day. I'm thinking that this line does not like hot, humid conditions...

I would give Orvis a call as the clear intermediate wonderline (Sly Line) out to perform in warm weather situations. However, I've used braided intermediate density mono core lines before and they tangled like crazy! Scientific Anglers used to make a clear intermediate striper line that just didn't work well in cold water situations. It was a braided mono core line and just never straightened out. They've since changed to a clear intermediate striper line for cold weather. Works much better.

Good luck,

Capt. Wayne

dump it for an airflo line instead....

I've used that line for a number of years in my guide buisness and have not had a problem.

Two things to try:

It's possible while fishing that your fly twisted your line. Try takeing the fly off and casting the line out. Then reel it back up. This should take care of any twist's you might have put in it.

Or, Strech it before fishing.

Hope this helps,

Randy

Randy,

I dumped the whole line and trolled it behind my yak 30 min before the nesting problems yesterday. That should have removed all twists I would think. As far as I know they have been making the clear int 9wt line for only a year or 2.

Capt.Wayne,

I use scientific angler (sa) line almost exclusively except for int.s. I bought the sa mastery series full sink in 275 gr and love it. Just can't find a clear int. that holds up. my Orvis WL clear yesterday when stripping through my fingers felt nurled. It was fine in the beginning but as air temps went up line performance dropped! Dramatically improportional!

If it makes you feel any better I had some problems with my airflo. A couple reasons, in a boat I hope to stretch out my line with a good fish. Sometimes when I don't stretch my line I miss big fish because my line tangles. After casting for some time, wrapping my line around everything in the boat because the wind is blowing 25 knots, and getting tangles as a result, I give my line A TIME OUT.

I clean it with zing and stretch it by hand. This is usually when about 30 nice fish swim by. It happened on monday. However, I was more relaxed and the line cast much better. I'm adding stretching my lines before I launch to my routine. A good stretch is hard to do anywhere but from a fixed object.

Good Luck.

I'm no expert on fly lines but while the Wonderlines do not need to be dressed they do need to be cleaned. Dragging your line behind the yak through the surface film for half an hour could have contaminated it and made it feel sticky. Try washing it in some warm water with a mild soap and let it air dry. Buff it off and try it again..... it may be the ticket.

Mike, Do you remember that I had so much trouble with my home made sinking line which finally broke off at the first spot and then I put exact same wonderline as yours and I could not cast? I never had such a bad experience with my fly lines like that day. Wind and tendinitis didn't help either.
That wonderline I put on that day was a brand new one which was a replacement of another wonderline that I ruined by putting line dressing last year. I didn't know I wasn't supposed to dress it.
I went to Orvis today and Orvis said they will gladly replace it with new one again.

I dragged behind the yak for 5 min total. Casted 25 min before problems to be exact. Soapy warm water and buffing I am sure will help for a little while....

Thanks...

To clarify Capt. Wayne's comments on the SA Striper line - they actually have two versions now - a cold water version and warm water version. The cold water is a single strand mono core line and the warm water is a braided mono core line.

The warm water was redesigned to make it a little more supple from the original version. I have the original version and have not had the same experience that Capt. Wayne has had. In fact I really like the line - it shoots like a rocket and rarely tangles. Yes, it doesn't really ever straighten out, but the stiff core allows this line to really sail through the guiides.

The cold water version, in my opinion, is pretty bad (I own both, BTW). It is too supple and in effect sags as it shoots though the guides, causing friction which ultimately reduces the distance of the cast.

If the warm water version is better than the previous version (which I hear it is) I wouldn't hesitate giving that a try.
