Understand that some of the surf casters have had good luck using SPAM as bait when there are no herring, eels or mackeral available for bait. They put it into a fine mesh bag to prevent deteriation and then hook it bag and all. They say there is an ingrediant in the product that drives the bass mad. Has anyone tried this or is it an old wives tale?

I have heard similar folklore... Never tried it because I don't imagine spam would cast to well on a fly rod :)

Anyone have any spam patterns...:) ( he he he he)

Amazing!! Is there anything that SPAM isn't good for?
... I can just hear those stripers saying "Yummmmmm"

Yep,

You want to turn the big boys show them the spam baby!

The can says it all "Soooo Goood"

Hee!Hee! Very funny.

The idea is to use it without the can.

Perhaps a pattern using peppermint crystal flash woven into a cube could immitate what is in the can. Maybe using a long shanked hook would permit several woven cubes in a row. You could always throw on some peacock herl as a wing to imitate seaweed or asparagus.

What...ever Cheju. This is a serious forum. You do it your way I'll do it mine. Your idea definitely has merits though.

The designer of this fly who by his request will remain anonomous says it imitates a fish with his head stuck in a can spam.

Why is this attractive? Striper gets stuck fish and spam or stuck fish with spam in him. It's two treats in one.

Good thought, Sagebrush!

Just proves my original thought, that there is something in SPAM that drives stripers wild. Otherwise, why would one put its head into a SPAM can?

I have heard that the cows like a spam, spam, spam, spam, spam, eggs and spam fly without quite so much spam in it.

I think that version only works with the uk stripers and ones named monty or python.

Seriously....it could be the fat in the product. I dunno about Bass but when I was a kid we used to use salami as bait for bluefish and they went crazy for the stuff. Of course, you could tie an old boot to a line and the bluefish would probably go for it....but really any oily meat worked.

Have you got anything that hasn't got as much spam in it?

Wow--the Spam Fly looks very similar to my secret weapon in Montauk--the Cheez Doodle Fly:

nauticalwheels,

It just goes to show. Somebody already thought of it, or someone will develop it. Nice colors andyf. I'll make sure to ask my friend if he can tie up a couple of those before the fall run.

Also, if nobody is tired of spam yet, try www.????.com (insert letters you think might be appropriate.

The music, gets to you after a while. I am told if you hum it loud enough, stripers will come in to investigate.

Skunkfinder,

I doubt it is the fat. It must be something else. I am told by a knowledgable source that some of the bait chunkers use low fat, salt free spam and they still kill the stripers. They buy it by the case and effect a double savings. Understand they remove the product from the can before using.

Cheju,

I think the stripers are more health conscious then they were in past years. Of course, by the time they head to montauk there loading up on the high calorie stuff.

But I guess we'll have to rework this without the can. Just having a little fun.

Sagebrush,

I think you are on to something!

I would suggest that you moderate your earlier fly pattern to take in the colors of the low fat, salt free spam can. If you design a fly for the contents, go for a dull gray with barely discernable streaks of pink running through it.

Good luck on the tying board! We all await seeing the results.
