I'm from central NY and I'm going to be in the Hauppauge / Islandia part of Long Island for work Tues - Fri - I was really hoping I could get a line wet from shore if there's any places close by (or close enough).

If anyone could post some generalized directions to any areas / beaches where I can get walk-in access and flyfish within an hour of that part of Long Island, I'd sure appreciate it.

Also, if no directions, maybe a fly shop nearby to go poke around in. However, I'd be willing to trade a dozen nice s/w flies with anyone who would email me directly / discretely with a real good place to fish (not a secret honeyhole, just a little more detail than "so-and-so beach" - just so I don't spend most of my time hunting for the parking areas!!).

Thanks a gazillion in advance,

Tom

(I'll try to post a jpg of one of my squid flies)

I'm no expert on the middle of the island (or any part for that matter) but you are very close to Sunken Meadow Park. Head north on the Sunken Meadow Pkwy to the end. Drive as far as you can to the east, then walk east on the beach. The Nissequogue (sp?) outlet should be good and I think you're less than 1/2 hour from wetting a line. You're also close to Crab Meadow, but I don't know the directions by street name, only know how to get there when I'm driving. Someone else may be able to help. South shore I know nothing.

You will be near Connectquot if you have any interest in fishing for huge stocked trout. Also near is The Flyfishing Store owned by Bill Ballan. I have had great and terrible experiences in this shop depending on who's working, but some people love his reels.

If you plan on fishing evenings or nights and you don't have a NYS Night Fishing Permit you will get a ticket at Sunken Meadow.

You can also try the Camp Site Sport Shop in Huntington. Also, fairly nearby.

I have a NYS fishing license, but I'm assuming this has nothing to do with a "night fishing permit" - where can I get one?

thanks again for the help and directions
