You guys with boats are driving me crazy. What are the chances of me hooking into some tunoids (or at the very least large blues) from shore? I live just west of Boston, but I'm more than willing to drive to the North Shore, RI, etc. Either fly fishing or spin casting would be fine by me.

Without divulging your secret spots, can you recommend a good place or places for me to start?

Thanks.

The "Spots" are not so seceret...

general concensus on the best shore spots for false albacore / bonito are:

1. West Wall - Galilee, R.I.
2. The Stone Pier - Wood's Hole, MA
3. The Big Bridge - State Beach Rd, MA (vineyard)
4. Sakonnet Pt. Jetty - Sakonnet, R.I.
5. Menemsha Jetty - Menemsha, MA (vineyard)
6. The Gut - Chappaquidick, MA (vineyard)
7. Edgartown Light Beach - Edgartown, MA (vineyard)
8. Narragansett Town Pier - Narragansett, R.I.
9. East Beach - Chappaquidick, MA (vineyard)
10. Great Point - Nantucket, MA

Guys - am I forgetting someplace?

If you've noticed a continued reference to a particular island off of cape cod, you've got the picture —_if you really want a tunoids from shore, get there. Otherwise you're really counting on luck.

I would put in the number two slot Weekapaug Breechway. Another spot to consider is Waquoit Breechway. Timing is absolutely critical, so much so I bought a boat.

Some places are just to small to post(quicksilver)....

West wall is your best shot for consistant action (and a spot to cast from with out dealing with the white buckets in your back cast... )...

sterlings,

I don't mean to nitpik...but want to point out West Wall is in Jerusalem, RI.

I'd like to add the channel into Salt Pond by the Coast Guard Station on Block Island for Bonito.

Add Watch Hill light. Some years the hardtails are consistent and reachable from shore. Even when they aren't showing, throwing something long range like a casting egg with a fly attached will get you into the strike zone. I'd also say Napatree Point, but more often than not they are just out of reach.

Agree about MV and the west wall being the most consistent spots, although WW has been slow for me so far this year.

Point taken —_the West Wall is indeed in Jeruselum, R.I., NOT Galilee. I don't get down there as often as I'd like.

As for other spots to suggest for a beginner there are tons...

All around Westport, Newport, the tips of the falmouth beaches, the west end of the canal, and god knows how many other spots that people don't know about just because nobody bothers to try.

The trick is to find shore access to deep open water, with lots of bait. Literally anywhere with this combination between Chatham and however far south you care to drive in Connecticut you can have a shot. Just about anywhere on Martha's vineyard is worth trying... East & west chop, the entrance to any of the ponds, Squibby, Gay head, Oak Bluffs, Chappy, Wasque, Tashmoo, Vineyard haven - they'll all have runs of hardtails at some point over the season.

False Albacore and Bonito are extremely rare if not totally unheard of on the North shore, Boston or South shore. There are bluefins WAY out (relative to shore that is), but no tuna action from shore north of the cape. Also, don't try too far up into Narragansett bay. I've personally heard of them up as far as the Northern tip of Jamestown, but the concentrations are much, much better where the bay meets the ocean.

Virtually anywhere you can wet a line from shore on the line across the mouth of narragansett bay between Sakonnet Pt and Watch Hill you stand a shot at hooking up with an FA or bone.

Good luck

good list...i think that the sakonnet point jetty is in little compton, ri

if you are lucky and time it right, ive had albies at my feet on hog island next to the mashnee flats, bell road and the railroad bridge area (west end of the canal) and had them blow through schools of bait along the sandwich bulkhead area...
