Fished Walden pond Saturday morning from about 6:30 until 8:30. This was as much a scouting mission as a fishing trip. I didn't know the rules at Walden and figured now was as good at time as ever to learn. Boat launch area opens at 5:00 AM and I had no problem parking.

Trolled the pond near the railroad tracks without any success. Trolled a woolly bugger with a grey ghost teaser. Their was not much boat traffic but the pond was loaded with swimmers. Apparently there was some type of swim class that morning as I saw about 30 swimmers in wet suits being led by two kayakers. These swimmers effectively shut off about 1/2 the pond to fishing.

I did a very scientific study of the water tempature and it still felt warm when I dipped my hand in. My guess is it will be a few more weeks before the fishing starts to heat up.

yeah, the warm water is definitely the second reason not to fish this water until later. the first being the huge number of people using the pond for uses other than fishing (which is totally fine by the way.)

i go in the early spring and late fall. it is fun then. i wade since i have no boat but it is still great. see my reply in the other walden post for more of my thoughts. when the season gets going a little more i think we will talk about exactly where we fish on the pond. for right now i will say that most of the time i am in the inlet by the railroad tracks and the one before it too. there are some nice drop offs and a lot of nice structure there. as far as fishing there now all i can say is deeper is better and walden pond gets pretty deep.

Good experiment.

Traditionally trout season doesn't start to pick up until around Columbus day. Once the water cools the fish come off the bottom and begin to chow down until Spawning time. Obviously the fish are there, just laying on the bottom, waiting for something to cross. I would say troll at a snails pace to have a ny success this time of year.

I guess some of the cape ponds (Shhhhhh here) can be really good during the summer after the sun goes down. The fish come up to take damsel nymphs and what not. Action only lasts for a half hour. Look for the fish to come up in the middle of the pond.
