Hello,
My friend and I are planning to hit Montauk in a few weeks to fish for whatever we can find. Can anyone advise as to where to wet a line? I have never been out there, so I have no idea where to begin.
All help is appreciated!!
Cheers,
Adam

Will you be in a boat or on shore?

I will be fishing from shore. I might have kayak access, but no gaurantees.

Montauk is a great place to fish from shore since you can fish almost any direction based on the wind (I'm assuming you intend to use a fly rod). I always pick a spot that I feel will allow me to cast comfortably with or across the wind.

To start, there is the point. Drive through town all the way to the end of 27. You have to pay $5 to park during the day. Walk down under the light so you can get a feel for the area. You won't be able to cast a fly rod under the light but you can see Turtle Cove to the southwest and up towards False Point and Shagwong point to the north. Turtle cove can be fished easily with a north to east wind (I'm right handed). The north side can be fished with a west to north breeze. I highly recommend getting Korkers to fish this area since it's nice to stand on a rock, and Korkers are the only way to do this safely. This area can get very crowded with surfcasters so don't force in and start whipping a fly line. Most of the guys are nice, but you never know.

As you walk west past Turtle Cove to the cliffs there are some really nice stretches with rocky areas that are great for bass. There are good spots all the way to town (about 5 miles).

As you walk north towards False Point the beach levels out some and there are more rocky areas. These are all great spots.

If there is a wind out of the South I like to fish the jetty's on the north side. You can access the east jetty at the end of East Lake drive and the west jetty at the end of West Lake drive (next to Gosmans).

There are whole areas I didn't cover since you won't have access (beach buggy only) from the inlet out to Shagwong. It would be quite a hike, but Shagwong Point is also a great spot to fish from shore.

If you can swing it, you really should try and go out with one of the guides. A good day in the rips will make your trip.

Thanks for all of the info. I assume most guys just catch a nap in the car?

Also, any advice on where to get some good eats?

Cheers,
Adam

Sleep in the car... you guys are my kind of people. I thought it was a family trip or something like that.

I have never had a problem sleeping in the car at the light.

Good eats... Johns Pancake House, The Dock (next to Gosmans), Joni's, there's a bakery with good coffee and donut/bagels on the circle but the name escapes me.

Where do you fish in Connecticut? Housatonic?

For Salt, I teach down here in Greenwich, so I fish here and in Fairfield at the Reef and Sherwood Island. Access everywhere else seems to be an issue.

For freshwater, I fish the Housie up in Cornwall.........big fattie browns!

You can put the kayak in at Fort Pond Bay and work your way out to Culoden Point.

This is a great spot to fish from the yak, on the north side of the south fork. You can paddle all the way doen to the inlet at Montauk lake.

I fish "The Reef" also. We should hook up sometime!:D

I haven't fished the reef from a kayak yet, so I'd love to hook up and fish it sometime. Thanks for the info on LI

From shore my favorite fly is chartreuse/white candy or olive/white candy. Also make sure you have small epoxies olive/white and tan/white for rainbait. A couple bunker flies should round you out. I hate to use a clouser from the beach, but if you get up on a rock or jetty chartreuse/white clouser or half and half are killers.

What ever you do, don't forget KORKERS. You can position yourself away from everybody if you perch yourself on a rock if you are fishing Montauk.

Saw the thread about CT fishing- I just started fishing in the Westport area. So far, have hit Mill Pond(flats between Compo and Sherwood). Where is the "Reef"? Any other suggestions for that genereal area?

I'm heading to Montauk Oct 12- hope you have some luck there.

Thanks
