Vertical Rod Holders

Hello,
I would like to mount some Blue Water rod holders to my center console with the rods supported vertically. Is it necessary to support the rods further up the blank away from the handle or am I just asking for trouble?

I just mounted 2 of those myself on the console of my 18' Maritime Skiff. I did not need to put supports anywhere above the holders - they seem to work fine by themselves. The only thing I had to do was to cut and bevel some starboard to keep the tips off the grab rail at the top of the console. Kentfab in Norwell did a great job machining 2 nice pieces of starboard for me that do the job perfectly.

Thanks for the reply.
I was worried about beating the rods to death.
If the don't need extra support I can mount them without modifications to the boat and console cover with a benefit of keeping my grab rails free.
Hope the season is going well.
