Does anyone know anything about sea ox boats? I am looking for a CC boat in the 21-23' range for bay and offshore on calm days. I have noticed several sea ox boats for sale, and they seem very inexpensive - is there a reason for that?

I was always of the impression that they were solid, heavy well built boats but here's a link to a discussion with varying opinions. http://www.wmi.org/www/boating/boatboard/T24457.htm

At the age of 22 (1987) I purchased a '81'17 Sea Ox CC. Fished it out in Montauk, LI for the next nine years. The boat is an "Ox" weighing in near 1400lbs. For such open and rough water, the boat handled the seas well. Lets face it, '17 is too small for Montauk. Nonetheless, it fished well even with the usual crew of three to four men. I had a 70hp Evinrude on it and it moved great. Well here we are sixteen year later, and I still have the same boat although I have made some changes to it for my fly fishing needs. The boat is now twenty three years old and I must say, has held up rather nicely. (KNOCK ON WOOD). Weather out in Montauk, or here in Huntington, I have NEVER met a Sea Ox owner who didn't love their boats. Unfortunatly, the company went out of business around 1994? They were a North Carolina manufacture. Word has it, they went out of business because they refused to scrimp on quality in order to compete in a growing market place. I strongly recomend the brand. Good Luck.

Thanks for the reply. I never found a sea ox that was quite what I was looking for, but I did end up buying a 21' 8" Privateer (also made in NC) center console. The hull is an '85, and seems to be in great condition. Privateers have a big flared carolina style bow and are built quite heavy (2200lb). I hope that it will serve me as well as your sea ox has for you.

SammyTx,

Know the boat and think you made a wise choice. Prior to buying the ox, I looked at a couple of Privateers that needed more work than the boat I endend up with. Both lines reminded me of each other. I've seen an 18' Privateer here in Long Island outfitted for fly fishing. Poling Platform, trolling engines, sweet. Good Luck.
