your local tackle/fly shop can give you one(a box).

I usually ask the local fly shop for their extra cardboard mailing tubes from the manufacturer. They have always been more than willing to give me one.

If you cannot find a tube for your rod, you could try using heavy cardboard.
Find cardboard that is the correct length, then fold it lengthwise twice to form a full-length triangle. Trim the excess material from the original width and length of the cardboard you started with. Allow enough, when sizing the triangle, for the rod to be fitted inside a length of soft foam that is used for insulating copper pipes. Tape securely and send. ;)

I sent a Diamondback rod back to Diamondback for repair and they had me send it to them in the aluminum tube that came with the rod. I affixed an address label to the rod, sealed it up with multiple layers of tape at the cap end, and off it went via UPS.
I don't know what kinds of tubes St. Croix and Orvis rods come in. It seems as though many manufacturers are going to nylon coated PVC - this might not work as well as an aluminum tube.

Mailbox etc. cardboard box $8.
Bill,
Is that the one you broke fighting the world's largest sea robin in Menemsha Pond on the Vinyard?

PVC tube at Home depot works well with heavy tape on the ends. It weighs more than corrogated but you pay dimensional wieght when shipping a fly rod anyway.

RJ: that'd be the rod... I got the last laugh however as I ate that robin last nite for dinner... I used the "Sam Riley Scup Cooking Method": I impaled it on a stick and roasted it over an open fire... call it "blackened helmet-head", there's an amazing amount of meat in the cheeks! ;)
re: mailing tubes: thanks for all the suggestions guys. I hope the turnaround is as quick with Orvis and St. Croix, but I've begun laying the groundwork with the wife for another purchase just in case.
