I will be out East this weekend (th-sun) with a 20' whaler. Noaa, is calling for stiff east winds, 15-25kts. Will it be a mess? Are their fish still around Gardiners, Accabonac , etc? How fishable is The point with an East wind in a small boat? Any info would help. I am thinking the cooler temps could turn our striped friends on. thanks for your help! R

East wind is the worst. It's early, but I would say the point will be unfishable Saturday. Probably Sunday. Gardiners has had fish near Bostwicks and east of Bostwick rip. Tobaccolot Bay usually fishes good with an east wind, but was empty last time I fished it.

Fort Pond has had some albies, but this is very hit or miss.

See the thread below started by Tuna regarding the past weekend's fishing. Friday morning was east winds 20 knots (maybe even 25) and wind against tide at Shagwong. I was out there . . . I saw a number of boats come out and then head back in. Really, really nasty . . . but the fishing was great. The point itself . . . there is no way you are getting there with that wind.

Res4cue,
I was out in last fridays east wind.It was as bad as it gets with waves coming over the stern several times on the drift through the shagwong rips. This is with a 23 foot Parker. The good news was I boated 16 albies and came away with only one bruised rib.The forecast is for NE 20-25 on saturday if that's accurate it will be Nowhere to run nowhere to hide time.Keep your eye on the flags.Good luck.

Keep in mind the long range forecast might not be coorect. It was supposed to be shifting from NE to SE today and sort of rough, but it laid down nicely. The fish also ended up blitzing the south side of the Point for over 3 hours on the outgoing (major bonus !!!!). Take the boat and see what develops.

Thursday looks like it will be pretty nice right now. You should be able to get out and explore everything from Gardiners to the south side. Friday will probably go either way depending on what you feel comfortable fishing. Shag has been productive and should be fishable through the weekend.

I stongly suggest that you avoid the point Saturday unless conditions change dramatically for the better. 7-10 right below the lighthouse is VERY dangerous. These waves can break several hundred yards off with the right conditions.

Stay safe, there should be plenty of fish on the north side.

Thanks Rich, Can u elaborate when you say the north side, Shag is where all the Campers are, correct? You think we can still make a run over their when the Point is 7-10? What about around to the north, where exactly, or even launching out of 3mile and hitting, Gardiners, and maybe plum gut? Will that east wind make that whole area miserable?
Thanks again

I consider the "north side" anything west of Shagwong Point. You will notice a dramatic change when you round the Shagwong in terms of wave height. There will be another marked increase as you near Montauk Point.

Fishing has been good from the inlet to the Shagwong can. Usually closer to the can.

Just south of Shagwong Point you can fish around the Oyster Pond which is also calm. Beware of the shoal off Shagwong Point.
