Great fishing today off Sandwich, terrible fishing on Sandwich.
Odd behavior of birds, not diving but slurping on the surface. Fish down deep underneath them. Most 20-26 but several to 34". Fish were on sand eels today, which explains the odd bird action...they were picking up pieces from fish down much deeper.
Tried shore when the seas kicked up, stunk. Creek was dead, fish were there but just out of reach all day.
A least now I know what the birds were feeding on. I was in sandwich too from 12:30 to 7:00pm. A lot of birds offshore. Frustrating to be shore bound. The fish finally came close to shore around 5:00pm. Most everybody got a shot a them. Plugs and flies worked well. A white deceiver did the trick for me. Most fish were in the 15 to 25 inches range. Once dark couldn't hook one, even though they were breaking all around me.

I started in Sandwich by Horizens, nada. Worked my way to old harbor, still nothing. I could see the birds working way out but then never came close while I was there.
Went out on to Sandy Neck.. Still saw nothing out on the water. Did find a dead seal on beach. Not sure whether to cheer or cry.
Decide to walk over to the marsh side and try to jump shoot ducks. As I walked out onto the marsh there was a dense cloud of birds over one of the inner creeks. Could not reach the creek from where I was plus the casting would have been in your face wind.
Hiked back to the car, drove off the beach and down 6A to Navigation rd. Launched the canoe and paddle the couple miles down the creek to the main channel. The blitz was still going on. Most fish were in the mid twenties caught on a 6" shad. Had to try to get back to the car before dark. But on the way back up the side creek I found another blitz going on. The fish were sitting in the shallow end of a pool nailing the bait as it was swept in. These were averaging a few inches smaller and it was tough to get my finger in their mouths to remove the deeper hooksets. Switched to a 2oz, crippled herring which made life much simpler. If I didn't hook a fish on the cast, these fish would try to take the lure as I lifted it out water for the next cast.
Now it's dark and the tide is very low. I can't see my landmarks and the embankments are very tough to climb to see much of anything else. Thus I made a wrong turn. Well lets just say I was exploring the next couple of hours. By the time I discovered where I wasn't and made corrections it was 11pm when I pulled the canoe. After all the paddling, I hope I can lift a rod sunday. --126-3-
