Open question:
After a miserable experience at Lakewood Camps, ME, this spring -new owners- I would like to try a new camp after my large group has been going there for 8 years. Do you guys have any recommendations for a fly-oriented camp in Western Maine or Northern N.H. with moving water, landlocks and brookies?

You might contact Tim or Lisa at Tall Timbers in Pittburg, NH but I'm not sure they want large groups.

You might want to give the folks at King & Bartlett in Eustis Maine a call. They list a group rate on their webpage, so they should be able to accomodate you. The webpage is here:http://www.kingandbartlett.com/

I've fished upper dam a number of years and have always camped on the logging roads. Right next to the dam there are great cabins that overlook the lake and the dam. I assume they are available to rent. Great for a group. I would call the Rangley tourism board or local guide shops for the answer.

The area is a unique spot to fish. I've pulled some nice landlocks out. They shot out of the water like missles. I've noticed that the spot is very dependent on water temp and flow as to where the fish are.

I worked for the Maine fisheries and found that the fishery itself is in trouble similar to the Rapid. Warmwater species like bass have moved in and can out compete the trout and salmon.

It's worth the trip!

Thanks, Guys. I will try King and Bartlett, have already looked at Tall Timbers, and will search upper dam. I think the recent year's publicity of the Rapid prompted the new owners to spend big money and buy Lakewood. It was a whole new and bad experience, after many years going there. Thanks again.

Try Grant's Camps on Kennebago Lake. Same region as Lakewood. More salmon, fewer brookies. Better pond fishing.

A real neat spot is Red River Camps in Aroostook, but that's a long way from western Maine.

I'm interested in what was wrong with you experience at Lakewood? That's one of the classics, and I have wondered how the new ownership would work out.

Ace,

The Lopstick Lodge in Pittsburg, NH is in a great spot (same as Tall Timber Lodge). In The Rangeley area, I was a long time patron of the Horsefeather Inn B&B in Oquossoc. That just closed, but next door is Oquossoc's Own B&B. It is a great starting poing for fishing the Kennebago, Little Kennebago, the Rapid, the Magalloway, Upper Dam. All are withing 20 miles. I don't know how large your group is, but the B&B can hold 10-15 ish people. Anyone have any other experience up that way?

Good luck,

Charlie
