I'm thinking about using a casting net next year to catch baitfish for chumming game fish close to the boat for fly fishing. Anyone with experience using these and what recommendations would you make for mesh size, overall net dia., and manufacturer. I'm thinking 3/8" mesh by 10' dia. and would be using the net in the river or nearshore. Not sure who to buy from or what to pay. Incidentally, I just viewed the 20 minute CALUSA video on www.calusa.com and thought that was helpful. But they seem to be very expensive. Any help appreciated. ;)

Used to use a cast net down in the keys to catch bait. They are a great way to catch bait fish like mullet, small to mid size pogies and the like.
when you talk about the size of castnets it is usually the ratios ..so a 10 ft net opens to 20 ft. a 8 or 9 footer would be about the smallest that I would suggest. 18 ft wide may sound like a lot until you start throwing it at bait that can see it coming. (10 being a good start)
As for mesh the bigger the better that will still hold the bait. If you are looking to catch pogies and herring I would look into a fast sinking mullet net. A little harder to throw until you get the hang of it but you catch more per throw. so more time chummin in the big fish and less bait fishing
I had good luck with Betts nets.. a little pricey but like all fishing gear the more you spend the longer it last and the easier to use.
