can anyone recommend some good streams to fish an hour or so north or west of boston? thanks

I just had the chance to read through this forum and saw that your question had no responses. Sorry about that. Fishing in New ENgland has so many great options, but few are that close to boston. SOme places close to an hour away are the Millers River in Athol and out to Erving. Both are accessed by Rte. 2. Also try the Squannacook and the Nissitissit. As far as hatches and flies on the latter 2, I can't help you, but on the Millers? Anything will work as long as it is an #18 BWO.

I'll throw out a few choices as well:

1) Millers, for sure...very lovely and secluded up in the WMA in Royalston. Trout and parr salmon.

2) Squannacook and Nissitissit are both very good for stocker and holdover trout.

3) The Swift (outlet of the Quabbin Res.) is an amazing fishery...full of sophisticated tailwater trout that can spot 7x tippet from 10 yards and have seen ever pattern ever tied. A great place to watch fish feed and occasionally fool one.

4) The Quinnapoxet and Stillwater Rivers drain into the Wachussett Reservoir. Both hold trout and, this time of year, some landlocked salmon.

5) The Parker and Ipswich Rivers on the north shore hold trout and more.

6) The Charles is a super warm-water fishery. Sunfish, bass, crappie, perch, pickerel, carp....the list is very long. And upstream of Natick there are trout in the spring.

7) The Sudbury River is another close and great warmwater playground. Go on and warm summer afternoon, and you will be freaked out by the sound of massive bass and pike as they roll around in the weedbeds. Good luck catching one, though.

Quabog river in the palmer/brimfield area warm water now but also has numerous rapids in the upper section that can hold trout Browns in deeper slower pockets.
