Ralph,

I just remembered a cold-weather trip I took last fall. FishinBill had pulled a successful all-nighter fishing the Charlestown Breachway, and I went down the following day to meet him. But I decided to spend the morning fishing the sweetwater, with heroic notions that I could pull off a "new england grand slam" of trout, striped bass and bluefish. Well, that didn't happen, as the surf got so rough on the beach that I decided not even to get out the saltwater gear.

However, I did have a fine morning session on the West River in Rochester. It is pretty close to where you live, and it is quite wadeable below the bridge and dam that is just a few miles off the interstate. I caught rainbow, brook (a big one!) and brown trout and missed a couple other browns. The browns were obviously recently stocked, but the rainbow fought and jumped like a seasoned holdover. I just looked up the RI stocking info and found that it is on the fall stocking schedule.

It is a classic small new england river, and quite pretty. It is not the Swift or Farmington, but it is a worthy place to wet a line.
