I have recently bought a Crease-fly kit from the U.S. and although it contains instructions, they are not that clear about how the plug is fitted. Can someone please enlighten a silly Englishman on the subject. Thanks

First off, I hope that your did not get it from Orvis. I was sorely disappointed with their kit. In fact after many, many flies I decided to bite the bullet and buy Joe Blados' kit which is the original. The Orvis kit's foam is just not workable. The glue comes off on the foil instead of the other way around. The funny thing is that I was just talking to a clerk in a great fly shop south of Boston. He used to work for Orvis and he actually brought the Blados' fly kit to their attention. They said they were pretty much going to do the same thing (Mr. Blados might be interested in this fact legally speaking.) He was surprised at my ranting. They must have skimped on the quality or something. I must admit, I like Orvis and I am usually quite happy with their products. Oh well.
Secondly, I think that prismatic markers are a great addition to the kit. They are not necessary but they make good flies look great.
Lastly for good step by step instructions go to:
http://www.*****************.com/Creasefly.html
(that's ***************** fly archive, for some reason that word prints *************)
Make sure you read them through because the instructions offer many helpful tips that I missed because I only looked at the pictures and skimmed the text at first.
Good luck!

I am not sure why that site's name comes out with asterisks instead of the name. I have noticed this before. Why? And how do I get around it?

I bought Joe's kit and I still had a few questions but looked in some other fly tying books I have solved them. The one that didn't clear up was before or after the eye of the hook...I tie mine with the foam just coming up to the back of the eye. Do a search in this forum for Crease flies and it will find you other entries about them.

I don't know a darn thing about crease flies. i do have a question though. what species do you target on the other side of "the pond"? are there the same fish there that we have on our east coast?
just curious,
dan
ps. good luck with the crease flies!

It appears to be related to a software setting issue. Not my department.

We catch European Bass, scad, Pollack, mullet, Atlantic mackerel and coalfish. You can probably catch a handful of other species from a boat but the sport isn,t very big over here. European Bass are the same as a Striper but smaller and they don,t have stripes! Their max weight is around 20lbs but you are not going to catch them that big from the Gt British shore, more likly to be 2 to 10lbs. Cheers from Steve.

No mine comes from Artsnflies in NY, they look to be ok but time will tell. The link you gave me does not seem to work! any ideas. Cheers from Steve.

Crease flies are very easy to tie once you know how. As to a kit I wouldn't bother. All you need is some craft foam and some markers. You can make them as complicated or as simple as you want. I use to put foil on them and do all kinds of things. NOw I just use colored foam, markers and some fine glitter in an epoxy coating and they work great. I vary the eyes and I especially like doll eyes as they bounce around with movement.

Thanks very much. I will try some if not all of your suggestions Steve.
goonzo, here is what you will need.
Craft foam - I get it at Art's and Craft Stores and a sheet costs app. $.49
Heavy Thread - you want to use thick thread. E is good.
Hooks - hooks like 34007 Mustad to start or something similar
CA Glue and activator - try to get a thicker formula so it won't run
markers - permanent markers is a variety of colors but especially olive, yellow, tan and red.
small lavender glitter - also from a craft store
5 minute epoxy
Do a search of the net and I'm sure you'll find pics and steps on how to make a crease fly. If you don't find any let me know and I'll take pics next time I tie some.

Tar very much, for the info. Do you find that the epoxy makes the markers run?
Steve.

Forget the plug. Its a waste of time and does not create any more commotion. Put a rattle inside if you want to add more vibration.
If you use permanent markers there isn't any running of the ink. Just let the markers dry which is easy because I tend to tie crease flies in batches and I separate the steps. I may do a dozen or more in each step.
1) I tie the tails on and then glue on the foam body.
2) I color the foam.
3) I apply the epoxy with the fine lavender glitter.
