Late on Veteran's day (sunny, but cold and windy in the upper 30's) near dusk, a buddy and I fished a mid-cape pond with a steep dropoff. Numerous trout and some bass were launching themselves well clear of the water just outside of fly casting range and a few more were making bulging rises. The only insects we could see were emerging black and olive midges.
Is this typical for a midge rise? Were we missing something like some other kind of hatch? What flies would you recommend?
My buddy, who casts a few feet further, got a couple of misses and a breakoff on a midge emerger. If they were jumping to midges, it seems a strange tradeoff of energy to not much food return.
