Mark Cahill has just posted a pattern contributed by Mike Briganti, (Boarmountain) which lays out the basic of tying flatwings.
There will be more patterns to follow!

Mike
I can follow all the steps in tying this fly with one exception what is the red material and how is it applied ?.
Another fantastic project by a very talented fly tier, I hope his effort will never stop.

Joe,
The red is the fuzz from the bottom of a red feather. Just put it on the thread and twist or "dub" it to form a rope and wrap it to form the pillow.

more flatwings.
Gorgeous flies being posted and appreciated and rightfully so. The Ken Abrames flatwing design is versatile and lends itself to myriad interpetration. Great to see all the good work and the tribute paid to the man who spent a lot of years in developing a saltwater classic.

Mike,
I think I know the answer. The saddle hackle is tied flat but is it tied up or down?
Thanks for the lesson.
